Senior Plumbing Engineer

Location: Queens, NY | Employment Type: Full-Time

Organization Overview

A large public-sector design and construction organization is seeking an experienced Senior Plumbing Engineer to support the planning, design, and modernization of large institutional and commercial facilities throughout the New York metropolitan area.

Working within a multidisciplinary engineering and architecture team, this position offers the opportunity to contribute to complex new construction, renovation, and infrastructure improvement projects that serve the public while utilizing the latest design technologies and engineering standards.

Position Summary

The Senior Plumbing Engineer will lead the design and coordination of plumbing, fire protection, and related building systems for a wide range of institutional and commercial projects. Depending on experience, the successful candidate may serve as a technical lead, project manager, or engineering supervisor responsible for multiple concurrent projects from concept through construction.

This role requires strong technical expertise, project leadership, and the ability to collaborate with architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Design

  • Design plumbing, drainage, domestic water, natural gas, and specialty piping systems for commercial and institutional buildings
  • Design fire protection and fire suppression systems, including wet, dry, mist, and specialty applications
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, construction documents, and design drawings
  • Perform system sizing, code analysis, and engineering evaluations

Project Leadership

  • Lead plumbing engineering efforts on multiple design and construction projects
  • Coordinate work across multidisciplinary engineering and architectural teams
  • Review engineering documents for technical accuracy, constructability, and code compliance
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, and deliverables throughout the project lifecycle

Technical Oversight

  • Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, plumbing codes, fire protection standards, and engineering best practices
  • Review work prepared by internal staff and outside consultants
  • Assist in developing engineering standards, design guidelines, and quality assurance procedures
  • Provide technical support during construction administration and field coordination

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Mentor junior engineers and technical staff
  • Coordinate with architects, structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering teams
  • Work closely with contractors, consultants, vendors, and regulatory agencies
  • Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, and project planning sessions

Construction Support

  • Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs)
  • Review shop drawings and product submittals
  • Support field inspections and construction coordination activities
  • Assist with resolving engineering issues during construction

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plumbing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • Current New York State Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Minimum 3–6 years of post-licensure engineering experience depending on level
  • Strong background designing plumbing and fire protection systems for medium to large commercial, institutional, healthcare, educational, laboratory, or municipal facilities
  • Experience leading engineering projects and coordinating multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent communication and project management skills

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with Revit MEP and AutoCAD
  • Strong understanding of applicable plumbing and fire protection codes and standards
  • Experience with domestic water, sanitary, storm drainage, natural gas, pumping, and specialty piping systems
  • Familiarity with sustainable building practices and water efficiency design principles
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards and life safety requirements

Preferred Experience

  • Experience serving as a project engineer or engineering team lead
  • Background working on large public infrastructure or institutional facilities
  • Experience reviewing consultant work and coordinating construction documentation
  • Familiarity with building information modeling (BIM) workflows
